CANBERRA: Matt Giteau scored a try and had a hand in three others to mark his last home match for the ACT Brumbies with a 32-17 win over the Melbourne Rebels in Super 15 rugby Friday. Wallabies flyhalf Giteau, who will join the French club Toulon next year after playing more than 50 matches over six seasons for the Brumbies, steered his team to its second straight win, scoring 12 points in a commanding individual performance. Giteau provided the last pass in first-half tries to fullback Christian Lealiifano and center Tyrone Smith, then scored himself to give the Brumbies an 18-3 lead by halftime. He threw a critical pass in a try to Pat McCabe which clinched a four-try bonus point for ACT after only 42 minutes. Chiefs, Hurricanes draw In New Zealand, the Wellington Hurricanes ended a turbulent week with a dissatisfying 18-18 draw with the Waikato Chiefs in Super 15 rugby Friday, leaving Waikato in last place in the New Zealand conference. The Hurricanes were thrown into turmoil midweek when rookie coach Mark Hammett announced All Blacks Ma'a Nonu and Andrew Hore — veterans of more than 200 matches — would not be offered contracts next season. The decision angered Hurricanes fans and reportedly caused divisions within the team. Both Hore and Nonu rose above their personal disappointments to play important roles in Friday's match. Hore scored the Hurricanes' only try of the first half and Nonu created a brilliant second-half try which helped to tie the scores after the Chiefs led 15-5 at halftime. The match was played in steady rain on an already sodden field and was of moderate quality. The teams shared 27 handling errors and fought out almost even shares of possession and territory.
