Wilfried Tsonga beat French Open Rafael Nadal 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-1 in the quarterfinals at Queens Club Friday. Earlier, Andy Roddick eased past seventh-seeded Spaniard Fernando Verdasco 6-2, 6-2, and second-seeded Andy Murray received a walkover into the semifinals when eighth-seeded Marin Cilic of Croatia withdrew with an ankle injury. In a delayed third-round match, defending champion Sam Querrey was beaten 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 by Britain's James Ward. Tsonga fired 25 aces and kept Nadal off-balance with his powerful baseline game as well as his inspired net play. The pair played just two points before rain interrupted the match, and despite the court being covered Nadal remained on his chair for several minutes, signing autographs before returning to the locker room. The French Open champion then edged the opening set. The Spaniard fought off a break point in the sixth game, failed to convert three break points at 5-5 but then claimed the last five points of the tiebreaker. After an exchange of breaks to start the second set Tsonga broke again to lead 5-4 and served out the set. In the third, Nadal missed a critical forehand volley at the net on game point and the fifth-seeded Frenchman went on to break for 1-0. That inspired Tsonga and he dominated the match. Wozniacki in semifinals In Copenhagen, top-ranked Caroline Wozniacki eased into the semifinals of the Sony Ericsson Open Friday with a 6-0, 6-1 demolition of Italian Alberta Brianti. The 20-year-old Dane took just 55 minutes to see off the eighth-seeded Brianti in front of a sellout crowd at Farum Arena. Wozniacki will meet qualifier Mona Barthel in Saturday's semifinal after the 142nd-ranked German recovered from a set down to beat American third seed Bethanie Mattek-Sands 1-6, 6-3, 6-4. Fourth-seeded Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic also edged through to the semis with a 4-6, 6-0, 7-6 (5) win over Shuai Zhang of China. Safarova will face the 112th-ranked Petra Martic of Croatia, who defeated Alona Bondarenko of Ukraine 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Berdych beats Troicki In Halle, with Roger Federer having withdrawn, second-seeded Czech Tomas Berdych is playing like the favorite at the Gerry Weber Open, blasting past Viktor Troicki in straight sets in Thursday's quarterfinals. Berdych, the 2010 Wimbledon finalist, appears on course to claim his second Halle title following 2007 as he beat fifth-seeded Troicki 7-6 (3), 6-1 to reach the semis. Berdych will next face unseeded German Philipp Petzschner, who beat eighth seeded Milos Raonic of Canada 6-3, 7-6 (6), 6-3. World No. 8, the third seeded Gaels Monfils also booked his spot in the final four, with a strong 6-4, 6-4 victory over German sixth seed and world No. 18 Florian Mayer. Monfils will take on another German in the semis, as unseeded 2008 Gerry Weber finalist Philipp Kohlschreiber beat defending champion Lleyton Hewitt of Australia, 7-6 (4), 6-3 in 1 hour and 30 minutes. Ivanovic advances In Birmingham, Ana Ivanovic reached her first semifinal since October by beating Mirjana Lucic 6-3, 6-4 at the Aegon Classic Friday. A former top-ranked player, Ivanovic dropped only three points on her service games in the first set, and struck the ball so effectively that few rallies lasted more than four shots. The Serb withdrew from the doubles competition to minimize the chances of a recurrence of her recent wrist problems. In the semifinal, Ivanovic will play Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia who earlier ended the run of American Alison Riske. Against Hantuchova, Riske played well, but missed her chance in the second set of a 6-2, 6-4 defeat. The other semifinal will be between Peng Shuai, who has just become only the third Chinese player to reach the top 20, and Sabine Lisicki, a 21-year-old German who is trying to lift herself back to within sight of the top 20 again after missing five months of last year's tour and falling beyond the top 150. Peng beat unseeded Marina Erakovic 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, while Lisicki scored a 7-6 (1), 6-4 win over Magdalena Rybarikova.
