RIYADH: A source at the Traffic Department has said that Saher speed cameras do not capture images of anyone in vehicle other than the person behind the wheel while the lasers employed to detect excessive speeds target only vehicle registration plates. The source told Okaz/Saudi Gazette that two types of camera are used, the fixed units erected at traffic lights and along main highways, and the mobile cameras mounted on vehicles and which are used at various locations in a given city. “The cameras can detect speeding vehicles along different lanes at the same time,” he said. “The fixed cameras at traffic lights register motorists jumping the lights and capture images of the vehicle as the offense occurs. The flash captures only the driver and the number plate. They don't record other passengers who may be present in the vehicle.” The source denied that the speed-detecting lasers cause any harm to drivers. “The lasers are only directed at the bottom of the vehicle toward the registration plate,” he said.
