The Rangers did not provide any details about the Canadian's death but local media reported Boogaard was found dead in his apartment in Minneapolis. “Derek was an extremely kind and caring individual,” New York Rangers President Glen Sather said in a statement. Boogaard began his NHL career with Minnesota in 2005-2006 and appeared in 255 career games in five seasons with the Wild.
