MONTEVERGINE DI MERCOGLIANO, Italy: Belgium's Bart de Clercq took a narrow victory in the Giro d'Italia's seventh stage Friday. Italian Michele Scarponi was second behind the Omega-Pharma Lotto rider on the mountain-top finish with Czech Roman Kreuziger third. First-year professional de Clercq attacked alone with 7km to go, taking the victory ahead of the pack by less than half a wheel. Dutchman Pieter Weening remained in the overall lead for a 3rd successive day.
