RIYADH: The Corporate League concluded its second season last week with a championship match and finals ceremony.
After seven weeks, 8 of the 16 teams – Al-Safi Danone, Arab National Bank, Bank Muscat, IFC, Jadwa, KPMG, Nesma and Saudi Hollandi Bank – qualified for the quarterfinals. With the remaining 8 teams competing for positions 9-16, the quarterfinalists battled for the championship title and positions 1-8 over a 3 week playoff period, which saw Arab National Bank, Jadwa, Nesma and Saudi Hollandi Bank emerge as semifinalists. Nesma upset last season's champion Saudi Hollandi Bank and Jadwa stunned last season's runner-up Arab National Bank.
Despite the second-leg UEFA Champions League semifinal, the championship match drew a big crowd. League sponsors Pepsi Al-Jomaih provided a wide variety of beverages while Diplomat Sweets sponsored the event with its catering. By the time the final whistle blew, Jadwa began its emphatic celebration of a 6-0 defeat of Nesma, accompanied by fireworks display which lit up the sky.
Jadwa won gold medals, while Nesma and Arab National Bank ended up as silver and bronze medal winners. Ayman Abdulla of Nesma was awarded the league's MVP trophy and Mazen Al-Yafai of Saudi Hollandi Bank was awarded the league's top scorer trophy.
The Corporate League (TCL) has proved to be Riyadh's most exciting event over two seasons now, characterized by excelling management, a professionally managed website showing photos of matches and video coverage of the finals, a spectacular soccer field and good refereeing by the Saudi Ittihad Referee Group.
Faheem Bakhsh, founder of TCL who said, “We have successfully managed to duplicate and improve experiences playing competitively. We hope to providing a wider variety of sporting events and leagues in the coming years.”
TCL was founded by Walid Saab and Faheem Bakhsh in October 2010 and has completed two successful seasons of football leagues.
