Insurance sector specialists have estimated the number of medical errors to be 300 and have confirmed, through their declarations, to Al-Riyadh that the total amount paid in the same year has been SR 10 million while another (sum of) SR 20 million is payable put is waiting issuing the final judgments of the cases by the medical committees. Insurance Specialist Waheed Al-Zakri has revealed that the number of medical mistakes committed in the Kingdom during 2013 has become 300 and that the total amount paid during the same year has been SR 10 million. He has clarified, as well, that there is a sum of SR 20 million which is payable but is still waiting issuing the final judgments of the cases by the medical committees. He has noted that the costs of such insurance policies range between SR 400 & SR 1400 annually, depending on the limits of the required coverage. Al-Zakri has added that a sum of SR 100 thousand approximately is paid for each incident which annual total amount is SR one million per each person in the medical team and that the insurance coverage of the medical mistakes may increase according to the benefits mentioned in the document. He has noted that as per the requirements of Saudi Council of Medical Specialists; the insurance is imposed on the general practitioners, surgeons, gynecologists, obstetricians and anesthesiologists.
