A total of 1,281 people died of infectious diseases on the Chinese mainland in April, the National Health and Family Planning Commission announced on Thursday. A total of 836,954 infectious disease cases were reported last month, it said in a statement. No cases of Class-A infectious diseases were reported. Plague and cholera are categorized as Class A, the most serious category. About 325,953 cases of Class B infectious diseases were reported, resulting in 1,207 deaths. Hepatitis, tuberculosis, syphilis, dysentery and gonorrhea accounted for 93 percent of the cases in this category, Xinhua quoted the statement as saying. It said that category C infectious diseases claimed 74 lives in April, with foot-and-mouth disease, infectious diarrhea and mumps reported most frequently.
