Bahrain's Shaikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa was elected as the new president of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) at a meeting Thursday in Kuala Lumpur. Shaikh Salman picked up 33 of the 46 available votes in the election for the post of AFC president, the organization said. Shaikh Salman replaced disgraced AFC president Mohamed bin Hammam of Qatar who was banned from football activities by FIFA. FIFA President Sepp Blatter attended the meeting in Kuala Lumpur. Shaikh Salman was also elected to FIFA's executive committee, receiving 28 votes, 10 more than Hassan al Thawadi, the only other candidate up for the available seat on FIFA's decision-making body.
