Palestinians. Unity,Or unity of objective?
Published in Alriyadh on 30 - 04 - 2011

Palestinian issue is likely to be lost amid the Arab uprisings. Interest on the Palestinian issue started to fade away when it was established in Tunisia. PLO and Hamas must recognize that the unusual transitional course of the Arab situation will result in more focus on domestic issues rather than external complications and will subsequently establish plans of which the Palestinian issue may not be included. This was expected in the course of the rapid acceleration of events where each country engulfed by uprising is looking forward to achieve its priorities. This was evident from what happened in the squares and streets where typical banners were replaced by national concern.
The outside world, including Israel, is observing course of events to keep eyes on this vital region. The progress of events is concerning them particularly when the Egyptians demonstrated against the peace agreement and the sale of gas at prices does not fit with their interests.
Palestinians are divided and fightin to the extent of the separation of Gaza from the west bank. This puzzled a nation at a critical destiny. It was difficult to accommodate for Hamas drifting under the umbrella of Iran and Syria claiming that they are defiance and resistance fronts, although not proofed. Abbas's government on the other hand, followed the diplomatic path through secret and public arenas only to collide with the Israeli right-wing government and the American deviation in support of Israeli in expansion of colonies and the rejection for a scattered-villages Palestinian state, or even a small entities separated by surrounding Israeli settlements. The division of Palestinians and lack of coordination has weakened their position and inhibited Arabs from negotiation exertion.
Convergence between Gaza and the west bank, or between the leaders of both sectors, is long overdue. Perhaps the implications of the current Arab situation resulted in reconsidering the case and made the parties move from confrontation to the initialed agreement. This proofed useful as Netanyahu annoyance with this agreement was evident when he said: "The Palestinian government, particularly Abbas, has to choose between peace with Israel or peace with Hamas". "Netanyahu would have to choose between peace and settlements", Abbas said. Manifestations of statements revealed that the Palestinian Authority has given concessions more than what they can afford with nothing in return from America or Israel. Hamas, under the current pressure, has realized that it is not benefiting from countries with minor influence and that the only way out is by unifying the Palestinian front and to adhere to the people will in order to avoid the national benefits being overwhelmed by personal interests. Europe acts in the recognition of the Palestinian government. This recognition does not clearly state on which land or area and whether colonies will be dismantled. Or perhaps it was just a formalities recognition to include part of the land in the west bank and Gaza?. Generally speaking, the reconciliation and unification of the Palestinian people will help to identify the course of their issue as the region is being viewed differently following the uprisings which took the world by surprise and the consequences of which are yet to be known.
