The illiterate nation
Published in Alriyadh on 23 - 04 - 2011

The constructing and developing of Arabic and its idioms is not one of the concerns of Arab countries except Mauritania the far country which possesses one million poets who exceeds the number of poets in the Arab World.
The nation which does not respect its own heritage, history, culture, sciences and letters is a feeble one and defeated internally because of its bad education system. Let's see the school and university curricula or even the graduate studies of Arabic colleagues; the students mistake I'rab, dictation and grammar. Take a look at the official letters between governmental and national authorities; you notice that the sentences are meaningless. This means that the language illiteracy starts to infiltrate our knowledge and letters. The songs, plays and films are written and read in slang. The folk poetry becomes the master of occasions and profits to the extent that many competitions awards are assigned for it among countries, departments and persons to erase the classic and modern Arab poetry and the philology.
Take a look at the new Arab situation. If the youth are able to oust governments and hope to build a contemporary country, they must rebuild the culture on a revolutionary basis. The biggest challenge is not only the political conflict with foreign countries but the lifestyle which leads to unprecedented crisis of awareness.
I remember the calls for developing the slang and the attempts to deform the fluent Arabic in favor of modern languages derived from Latin because they think that Arabic with its grammar and derivations is a dead language which cannot keep up with science and new knowledge. I cannot imagine how Japanese, Chinese and Korean managed to be living languages that do not block research or development and compete with the civilization of Europe and forego other countries?
The Arabic Language Academies died when we heard about "Shater wa-Mashtour" (sarcasm of sandwich meaning in Arabic). It is not the fault of Arabic; it's the fault of people who do not understand or defend their own language (the basis of civilization) or knowledge. The proof is that if we keep developing and translating each modern idiom to it and assign fifth of budget to its development, it may contain the whole Islamic world which is thirst for understanding religion origin in its native tongue.
We heard a lot about our language crisis, and its defenders become traditional. Here we are not calling for reading and speaking in the language of dictionaries and lexicons but to use the easy language in our modern life, so that the new product does not become a part of the language. The most important thing is that we must be aware of the surrounding languages and cultures, and if we do not perceive the surrounding threats, we will neglect the most valuable fortune in our life.
