Ninety percent of work on the new upgraded King Abdulaziz International Airport (KAIA) in Jeddah has been completed and will soon be operational, an official of the Makkah Governorate said. The governorate recently published new pictures of the airport on its official account on Twitter. The General Authority for Civil Aviation (GACA) said earlier that the first phase of the three-phase project will handle 30 million passengers per year at peak times, while the capacity in the second phase will rise to 55 million passengers and up to 100 million passengers in the third phase. The airport will increase the number of flights from 500 to 1,000 a day. The total area of the project is estimated at 105 square kilometers, including the parts covering the existing airport. The project employs 21,000 workers and engineers from 110 companies.
