The Qatari regime is showing every sign of being in a state of confusion. It is a clear reflection on the part of its rulers that they are still groping in the dark for an effective solution to the crisis brought about by its own doing. For the past two decades, the country has dwelt on deceit. This is what has left it in a constant state of tension with its neighboring countries, which have always been more focused on achieving stability and security in the region. There is no logical reason for the positions adopted by a tiny country such as Qatar – other than its idealistic quest to raise its profile among the powerful countries of the world. This ambition nursed by Qatar has often been the reason for other countries in the region looking the other way, in the hope that it would see reason some day. But this was not to be. Qatar's wayward ways had come to such a stead that they had begun to undermine the security and stability of Gulf and Arab countries. It has been warned on several occasions against adopting such a hostile stance, but to no effect. On the contrary, the Qatari leadership seemed to be digging in all the more with its frosty attitude and distant policies. Its media outlets, too, went berserk with its ‘national' agenda, giving a free ride to leftists and the voice of the Muslim Brotherhood. These groups were known to be on the good books of Qatar, while spreading a hate campaign against the Gulf states. The ongoing crisis has further exposed Qatar's close affinity towards the region's foes. Every plane load of so-called assistance reaching Qatar reflects who Doha hobnobs with. The regional groups, which are now supporting and encouraging Qatar to continue on the defiant track, are only seeking to benefit from the crisis. As of now, Qatar does not seem to be looking to make amends. Qatar should realize that it is putting the well-being of its people on the line by remaining obstinate. Doha should return to the fold and not be led by decisions made at distant capitals to break the deadlock. The countries that are pooling in to support Qatar are the ones benefitting from the boycott. It is time the Qatari leadership sees through this game plan and get back on the road to peace and prosperity for its people and the entire region.
