US pop star Madonna has rejected reports that she has filed for the adoption of two more children from Malawi. "I am in Malawi to check on the children's hospital in Blantyre and my other work with Raising Malawi and then heading home," a spokesperson for the singer told US news channel CNN in a statement on Wednesday. "The rumours of an adoption process are untrue." Earlier a spokesman for the southern African country's judiciary had said the singer, who has already adopted two children from Malawi, David Banda and Mercy James, had filed the paperwork for two more adoptions. "I can indeed confirm that Madonna is interested in adopting two more children from Malawi. Her local lawyers are working on the initial adoption process," Mlenga Mvula told dpa by telephone. Mvula declined to disclose the names of the children that Madonna was reportedly interested in adopting, saying that some issues governing an adoption process were kept confidential to protect the children's interests. The spokesman said that a court in the capital Lilongwe, the current guardians of the children and the government would all be involved. The 58-year-old star has created a non-governmental organization, Raising Malawi, to support orphans and vulnerable children in the country. She has also sponsored schools and hospitals. In 2014, President Peter Mutharika appointed her as Malawi's ambassador for child welfare. Mutharika's predecessor Joyce Banda, however, had a stormy relationship with the singer, whom she accused of having bad manners and of expecting exaggerated gratitude from Malawians.
