Uraguay's last dictator died Wednesday of heart failure at age 91, according to news reports quoting the military hospital where he passed away, according to dpa. General Gregorio Alvarez headed the military dictatorship in the South American country from 1981-85. The military seized power in 1973. Alvarez turned the government over to the supreme court in 1985 after the military conceded to mass protests pressing for free elections. He was later sentenced to 25 years in prison for the abduction and murder of 55 people who opposed the regime. He had been in prison since 2007.
