Arab League's Ministerial Council: Iranian interference violates international law, principle of good neighborliness
Published in Alriyadh on 11 - 01 - 2016

The Council of the Arab League condemned the attacks on the Saudi Embassy in Tehran and the Saudi consulate in Mashhad.
In a decision issued here yesterday after the end of the emergency meeting held here at the level of foreign ministers at the request of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Council of the Arab League held Iran responsible for these attacks, calling on Iran to abide by international conventions and treaties in this regard, particularly the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations 1961 and the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations 1963.
The council deplored Iran's hostile and provocative statements against the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the wake of the execution of a number of terrorists, according to judicial rulings against them. The council considered these Iranian hostile and provocative statements as a blatant interference in the affairs of the Saudi justice and the internal affairs of the Kingdom, such intervention considered incompatible with the UN Charter.
The council affirmed its full solidarity with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in confrontation of Iranian hostilities and provocations, and supported the Saudi efforts to fight terrorism, and the Kingdom's role in promoting security and stability of the region.
The council condemned the continuing Iranian government interference in the internal affairs of the Arab countries over the past decades, stressing that this approach leads to undermining security and stability in the Gulf region, and considering it as a violation of the international law and the principle of good neighborliness as well.
The council called on Iran to refrain from provocative acts and hostile statements that would undermine and threaten the security and stability of the region, denouncing the Iranian continuing occupation of the three United Arab Emirates (UAE) islands 'Tunb Al-Kubra, Tunb Al-Sughra and Abu Musa,'. It emphasized the full sovereignty of the UAE over the three islands and announced its support for all peaceful measures taken by the UAE to restore its sovereignty over the occupied islands according to international law.
The council also condemned Iran's continuing interference in the internal affairs of the Kingdom of Bahrain and the Iranian support for groups which pose serious threats to Bahraini security and stability, denouncing Iranian interference in the Syrian crisis and the serious implications of this interference on the future of Syria and its security, stability, national unity and territorial integrity.
The council condemned Iran's interventions in the Yemeni internal affairs through Iranian support for the anti-legitimate forces hostile to the Yemeni government and its negative impact on the security and stability of Yemen, the neighboring countries and the region in general.
The council urged the Iranian government to desist policies that lead to sectarian and religious conflicts and to refrain from supporting groups that fuel these conflicts in the Arab Gulf countries, calling on Iran to stop supporting militias and armed parties within the Arab countries as such activities are considered a threat to Arab national security.
The council's resolution stressed that relations of cooperation between the Arab countries and Iran should be based on the principle of good neighborhood, ensuring stability and security of the neighboring countries and refraining from interfering in their internal affairs.
The council instructed the Arab League Secretary General to communicate with the foreign ministers of the UAE, Bahrain, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Egypt to follow up the developments of the crisis with Iran, explore ways to deal with the Iranian interference in the internal affairs of the Arab countries and report the findings to the next session of the Arab League Ministerial Council.
The council called on the Arab League Secretary General to convey this decision to the UN Secretary General and to the President of the UN Security Council as well. It also called on Egypt, in its capacity as the Arab member of the UN Security Council, to follow up this issue.
The council explained that Lebanon abstained from voting on this resolution.
