Nasrallah's Speech: Two Threats
Published in AL HAYAT on 20 - 07 - 2012

Two major threats were carried by Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah's speech two nights ago, i.e. its issuance from outside the current Arab context and its attempt to lead a wide faction of Lebanese outside their historical social context.
Indeed, the tense and reactionary talk was extremely distant from the current Arab concerns, thus disregarding the tyranny, oppression, military dictatorships, failure of development in the entire Arab world, unemployment and immigration, which are all reasons that detonated the revolutions from Tunisia to Yemen and Bahrain. He just settled for the dual interpretation of the world, which according to him is divided between good and evil, between a West (that includes Israel and the Arab regimes) and an East with unknown elements, between slanderers and cheerers, resistance fighters and traitors. Therefore, he did not bother checking the acute complexities of Arab societies whose crises have exceeded the conflict with Israel or alienation to the West.
This vision features an insult to the Arab populations yearning for a better tomorrow and trying to break all the restraints imposed on them, including those of the Israeli enemy and affiliation with America. Indeed, according to Nasrallah, the Arab populations are being led by American and Israeli games, while not one sane person among these millions who took to the streets in Cairo, Tunis, Benghazi, Taez, Sana'a, Homs and Damascus is paying any attention to what the Sayyed is saying about the American conspiracy dubbed “Arab Spring."
Such a belief downplays the awareness of the Arab people, and their ability to determine their interests and draw up their future. It also reduces them to cattle, awaiting the inspiring leader and the just despot to come from behind the scenes (or atop the tanks of rejectionism, it is all the same) to lead the lost populations toward the bliss of victories against the Israeli enemies. And these victories can only be secured at the hands of “leaders" such as Asef Shawkat, Hassan Turkmani and Daoud Rajha. Does he expect those who were arrested, tortured and humiliated among Lebanese, Syrians and Palestinians at the hands of the latter, their soldiers and their likes to believe that talk? Is there any worse disregarding of people's intelligence?
The second threat featured in Nasrallah's statements was his attempt to lift a wall surrounding the group he heads, thus calling on it to become engaged in eternal conflict with the West, Israel and the Arab regimes. This conflict can only be justified in the world of politics, interests and international relations as being against a pure evil tendency mobilizing the powers of this fierce world and pushing them to control our countries, wealth and sanctities. Hence, everyone must trust the “command of the resistance" guiding us during these times of victories, without any regard for the decisions and choices of the people carrying the cause, i.e. the Palestinians, and the amendments which might affect their priorities.
This reveals the blatant face of the sectarian rhetoric, of irrationality and the transformation of history and politics into legends and fates drawn up by the unseen. For his part, the believer has no option but to seek refuge behind the group's cloak and weapons, as shown by this odd idea of an “honor pact" in which each sect silences its journalists, writers or instigators who are harming the other sects. In other words, there is no room for the expression of one's opinion or for personal freedom if they ever go against the laws of sectarian order. And obviously, no one has the right to wonder who is setting these laws, benefitting from them, managing the relations with the other sects and how.
Unfortunate is this bias in favor of the Arab tyrants, and painful is the surrender to a narrow vision whose promoters decided to confront history and the people of the region with their groups, ones which might share the losses of the these Arab people if they do not reconsider their courses.
