In addition to portraying the lines of political and sectarian division, the circumstances of the trial of Fayez Karam – who is accused of dealing with Israel – provide an idea about the Lebanese political and judiciary system. Although the retired army colonel received a “preferential” treatment from the part of the security apparatuses, which do not hesitate in maltreating the detained persons, the side that Karam is affiliated to launched a campaign against the judiciary and the information branch that reached the extent of vulgarity as the leader of the concerned movement likened Karam to Judas Iscariot. But the trial took place in Lebanon where institutions and laws are worthless. Clues presented in a trial are also worthless as long as the movement that Fayez Karam belongs to is still performing the political task of covering for Hezbollah and the Syrian role in Lebanon. In addition, the need for a Lebanese Christian voice has increased in order to defend the Damascus regime in the face of the Salafism that is pointing its face in Syria. The odd thing is that those who consider themselves as opponents of Israel have received the verdict in total silence instead of working to appeal against it and increase it from two to fifteen years. MP Michel Aoun and his movement played a major role during the July 2006 war from Hezbollah's point of view. He then played the role of openly speaking about hidden things that the party did not dare voice out for sectarian considerations. Currently, Hezbollah is settling part of a previous debt, and this part is being paid from the Resistance's account. But the party and its secretary general are unaware that this account is nearing its end on the Lebanese level (outside the framework of the Shi'i sect, which is being subjected to growing waves of terrorization and deception), and on the Arab level as Sayed Hassan Nasrallah keeps on reiterating his support to the Syrian regime on every occasion, at a time when this regime is proceeding with the killings of the citizens and is working on igniting a civil war. This is one of the deepest strategic mistakes in the history of the party. Only a naïve person would be convinced with the excuses of the Aounist movement and its MPs in defending their convicted colleague, regardless of all the errors of the intelligence, security and judiciary apparatuses. The movement's officials, who apparently do not know any shame, are the ones who conferred a political meaning to Karam's arrest, and they shoved their “patriotic” movement in a turmoil of skepticism and mistrust by refusing to confine the trial to one individual who chose to be an Israeli agent as a way for political and financial advancement. Instead, they turned this issue into a global battle with a foul sectarian taste. The dismay of the Free Patriotic Movement is not just limited to the case of Fayez Karam. Rather, it extends to issues related to governmental work and to the services connected to the interests of millions of Lebanese people. Thus, according to the Movement, any call for discussing the plan for saving electric energy that Minister Gibran Bassil came up with, is a conspiracy aimed at propagating corruption and keeping the people in the dark. The ruses of the opponent ministers of the former cabinet are renewed through some ministers who are supposed to be the allies of the Free Patriotic Movement… All this is taking place at a time when the leaders of the Free Patriotic Movement know (but do not admit) that they are not the decision makers in large policies that others are imposing on them; and that they are not strong enough to oust a general director from his post or restore an official post to the Christians if the puppet master believes that this is a must. The experience of “restoring” the post of the general director of the general security seems to be rich with indications. However, these words will not reach the ears that have been deafened by tension and anger.
