It was believed that Hezbollah would on the commemoration of the July War announce surprises for Israel that would rob its politicians of sleep, confuse its army commanders and leave them wondering what would await them if they were to undertake a new military adventure in Lebanon, as has become customary for the party ever since the ceasefire four years ago. However, the real surprise was that it had set aside its “surprise” for the Lebanese this time, warning them of the negative repercussions of the Special Tribunal and dividing them into two camps: one which resists and one which embraces foreign agents, with no grey zone between the two – thus increasing the tension between them which had not waned in the first place since Hezbollah declared its state of eternal war against the Zionist entity, a war which would not end as some may imagine with the retrieval of the Shebaa Farms and the Kfarshouba Hills… and two olive trees at a crossroads, the location of which is known to and kept secret by only those who have long been well informed, one of them being Hezbollah's ally MP Michel Aoun. The latter has not cleared himself of this charge of being “well informed” in his statements, which resemble edicts and predictions. In fact, he has insisted on the fact that he knows every detail, and has stressed the truth of the “scenario of sectarian strife” which was ascribed to him and which Hezbollah has adopted as a basis for its “new” stance on the Special Tribunal, saying: “I do not deny this scenario at all. This is how I imagined it. I am a military man and a specialist at revolutionary wars, I know how they are”. Yet Aoun this time took an additional step in asserting the sincerity of his alliance with Hezbollah, introducing himself as party to that same sectarian strife he was warning of, and saying to its Secretary-General: “they want to murder you a second time, Sayyid”, nearly with tears in his eyes as he proudly enters the “Karbala Encyclopedia”. As for the “murderers” whom Aoun is referring to, they are well known: they are the judges and investigators of the Special Tribunal, as well as anyone who awaits formal accusations in the Hariri assassination, anyone who considers the Special Tribunal to be a self-standing international institution, the decisions of which no one can influence as they are based only on the facts revealed by the investigation, in addition to all of those who survived the May 7 “rehearsal”. Moreover, Aoun has also taken an additional step towards his holy alliance's higher authority, i.e. Tehran, adopting the method of revealing conspiracies and the unknown which its leaders are skilled at, and placing the whole world on one side and Iran on the other. He too does not accept grey or mixed areas between black and white, as one is either with the revolution or against it, and one is either with the resistance or an agent of Israel. This is how those who protest in the streets of Tehran the deterioration of their livelihoods and the robbing of their wills become partners of the “Great Satan”, spies and apostates. And this is how those who refuse to thrust Lebanon into a constant conflict with ambiguous goals become conspirators who deserve to be dealt the punishment of “changing the rules of the game”, even if they are not party to it. The effort exerted by Aoun time after time to prove his loyalty to his ally and his ability to adapt to all new circumstances and interpretations is certainly part of his engagement in the two-color system which does not accept a third and of his identification with his alliance to the point of melting away. Yet the fear is for him to reach the point of obtaining the “talent of suicide” which looms in the background of the behavior engaged in by his allies within Lebanon and abroad.
