Ayoon wa Azan (Marital Infidelity)
Published in AL HAYAT on 07 - 06 - 2010

A recent poll has shown that 90 percent of Arab husbands cheat on their wives in their countries, while the remaining 10 percent cheat on them in Europe.
In fact, I have not conducted any such poll, as Israeli crimes, from the Palestinian territories to the open seas, do not leave enough time to follow other items. Nonetheless, the commotion that arose after Israel murdered peace activists from Turkey and elsewhere coincided with the divorce of the beautiful American actress Sandra Bullock from her husband, Jesse James, a prominent television personality with a show named after him. This took place after it came out that he cheated on her with strippers. I saw the picture of one of them, her body covered with tattoos in the form of words and pictures.
The husband attributed his marital infidelity to his difficult life as a child. This reminded me of Roman Polanski's using the Holocaust as an excuse for committing statutory rape, or Bill Clinton's excuse when he admitted, after first denying, his relationship with an intern, Monica Lewinsky, in the White House: he said in his memoirs that he did the deed because he thought that he could get away with it.
Sandra Bullock's divorce sparked one thousand and one news items and reports about the infidelity of celebrities, present and past. We have been hearing about the most famous of them, such as golf great Tiger Woods, who cheated on his wife with about as many women as there are in the phone book. Before him, there was Michael Jordan, who got married in 1989 and divorced in 2002, after his infidelity was proven – a divorce that cost him $168 million.
Of course, there isn't enough time in the rush of the media cycle to talk about the infidelity of actors and actresses in Hollywood. We would need an encyclopedia; the capital of the cinema industry appears to be a place where people get married with the intention of cheating on each other, and divorcing.
There is a tradition in the United States, and the west in general, to put copies of the Bible in hotel rooms. This prompted an experienced man to say to his friend: if you see her carrying the Bible in her hand, ask her, “Which hotel room did you spend the night in?”
I know that there are Qurans in many hotel rooms in Arab countries, but I would not ask the previous question there. However, I did hear about a woman (from Homs in Syria, or the Said region of Egypt) who doubted her husband's behavior, and gave him an Islamic tape, hoping he would come to his senses. She discovered a week later that he had taken to wearing the hijab.
In every country, women are more loyal than men. He wants to be the first love of her life, and she wants to be the last love in his.
“The musician dies and his fingers keep playing,” as the expression goes, which explains how a man hopes to die in bed, at the age of 90, from the bullet of a jealous lover.
A young man complained to his father that he had sent a fax to his wife, informing her about his imminent return to the country, and when he arrived, he found her in bed with another man. His wise father said, “Perhaps she didn't get the fax.”
In addition to the above, I recently read about the biological reasons for marital infidelity: diversity improves the quality of offspring, and I am sure that those who have authored such studies are men.
Another reason mentioned in the surveys is that the husband cheats because he does not get enough from his wife, or because he knows that he can do so, or because sex with his wife is boring, or because he no longer loves her, or because he cannot waste an opportunity, or seeks revenge.
I say, such a husband should look in the mirror before opening his mouth; he is no longer Antonio Banderas, and did not resemble him in the first place, when he was a young man.
Nonetheless, I know that the issue is as old as the institution of marriage itself and it will continue, as long as marriage does. After Sandra Bullock's divorce, I read about a beautiful black American television actress, named Garcelle Beauvais-Nilon, who divorced her husband and the father of her two children, after discovering that during nine years of marriage, he was having an affair with a woman of ill-repute in Chicago for five of them. While I had not heard the name of this actress or her husband previously, she appears to be famous in the United States, based on the number of news items on her divorce, especially after she sent emails with details of what had happened.
A man told his friend that he was going to be a father. The friend said: “Congratulations, this is great”. The man replied: “Not at all, my wife doesn't know”.
Perhaps he was the same husband who was caught by his wife with his hands on another woman, and said, it wasn't anything bad, I was trying to guess her weight.
I read that love dies if you squeeze it, and flies away if you touch it lightly.
