When Hillary Feels Regret
Published in AL HAYAT on 18 - 03 - 2010

What Israel is doing to speed up the plans of Judaizing East Jerusalem and displacing the Arabs from there does not require an accurate description that takes into account any “diplomatic language”. This applies to the relation between US President Barack Obama and Benjamin Netanyahu's Government, which “insulted” his Deputy Joe Biden, before US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton hurried to prove “good intentions”. She thus appeared as someone apologizing implicitly for the “strictness” with Israel, and regretting holding it accountable for embarrassing Biden when it announced a new settlement project that continues to take over Jerusalem…
“Synagogue Ruins,” located a few meters away from Al-Aqsa Mosque, ignites an eternal clash that leads to ruins. Netanyahu and the extremist group around him are aware of this, with all of them insisting on provoking the Palestinians and the Arabs to the highest levels. They are convinced that the reactions will not go beyond bouts of anger.
What happened during the past ten days does not reveal new facts about the Israeli plans and intentions. Its most prominent significance is undermining the American efforts to resume negotiations with the Palestinian Authority, albeit in an indirect manner… and foiling the channel of communication with which the American Envoy George Mitchell was tasked, at a time the Obama administration's need for any achievement in the region mounts, during the renewed term of the Congress in the midterm elections.
After all what happened, ranging from the announcement of the settlement project to the inauguration of the “Synagogue Ruins,” the bureau of Netanyahu – who is busy with setting up “the peace tent” – responds to Clinton's hint to absorb the American-Israeli tension by saying: “We have demonstrated our commitment to the peace process in words and actions!”
There is certainly no need for the diplomatic language to describe what the bureau has brazenly announced, appearing as a swindler who claims integrity and purity. At the same time, Assistant US Secretary of State for Near East Affairs Jeffrey Feltman was announcing from Libya that he discussed with its officials the agenda of the anticipated Arab Summit in the city of Sert, particularly the “peace process,” hoping “that the Arab leaders would adopt actions and words that lead to the progress of this process.”
Hillary Clinton “atones” for the guilt of reprimanding Netanyahu by reminding of the “absolute guarantee for Israel's security,” while Jeffrey Feltman's mission in Libya addresses a message to the Arabs on the eve of the summit, stating that they are required to make steps that encourage the so-called peace process. So, the American pressures are put on them, while the mob of the extremists in Israel increase the pressures of the settlements in order to plunder more Palestinians lands and stifle the authority which is supposed to hold negotiations with it over the two-state solution…one which the Netanyahu government continues to kill, by rendering it unlikely. Let us say that the indirect negotiations take four months, and each month will have a plan to build more settlements, until the negotiations are obstructed and fail, even if Mitchell succeeded in launching them. After that, [Israel] will continue to devour the lands, to the extent that the Palestinians will have nothing left to negotiate about.
The realities of the past days were very disappointing in terms of the possibilities of any moves made by the “Democratic” administration to cease the expansion of the settlement activities' cancer at least. The Palestinian Authority will be one of the victims of this cancer, which will once again nurture the extremist groups in the region, regardless of how wise it is to warn against a religious war.
The most prominent realities that cannot be contested is the fact that the government of the Jewish extremists challenged all the resistance factions, not only the authority, to dare punish Israel, while it proceeds with humiliating everyone and squeezing the US Administration in the corner. Does anyone still remember Obama's address and promises to the Islamic world?
Mitchell adjourns his visit to the region and Washington seeks the assistance of the Quartet Committee in the hope that it exempts it from another embarrassment with the Israeli Government. Thus, it uses the committee's statement to cover up for its stand on the settlement activities. The question which goes without saying here is to what extent is Israel influenced by a statement that calls upon it to stop its provocations and its plans to liquidate the Palestinian cause?
General David Petraeus, the head of the US Central Command, does not uncover new facts when he says that anti-American sentiments are on the rise due to the perception of “[US] favoritism towards Israel.” But the “brilliant” discovery was made by the second-ranking Republican in the US Congress Eric Cantor who manipulated the question of security to provoke the fears of the Americans, warning that their country's security is threatened because “it does not support Israel as much as is necessary!”
…But until [the United States] supports Israel “as much as is necessary.” What would remain of Palestine?
Once again, hasn't the division of the Palestinians become the most effective weapons of the [Israeli] Government that wants to Judaize Jerusalem?
