THE CENTER-LEFT CANDIDATE TO BECOME ITALY'S NEXT PRIME MINISTER SAID THAT HE WOULD PULL OUT ITALIAN TROOPS FROM IRAQ 'AS SOON AS POSSIBLE' IF HIS COALITION WINS GENERAL ELECTIONS THIS WEEKEND.
'WHEN WE GO TO THE GOVERNMENT WE'LL DECIDE FOR A SPEEDY PULLOUT OF THE TROOPS, IN SECURE CONDITIONS, TALKING WITH THE IRAQI AUTHORITIES,' ROMANO PRODI SAID MONDAY, ADDING THAT THIS WOULD BE DONE 'AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.'
PRODI'S COMMENTS CAME AS HE SQUARED OFF AGAINST PREMIER SILVIO BERLUSCONI IN THEIR SECOND AND LAST TELEVISED DEBATE BEFORE WEEKEND NATIONAL ELECTIONS TO DETERMINE WHETHER THE CONSERVATIVE MEDIA MOGUL REMAINS IN POWER, ACCORDING TO A REPORT OF THE ASSOCIATED PRESS.
